Steel frame homes require Termite Protection in Brisbane, QLD.
The never ending question arises every few weeks and most times it’s builders looking for a form 16 on a “completed” home or extension, (“Do Steel Steel frame homes require Termite Protection in QLD” ?)
So I thought I’d provide some insight on the subject to avoid some pain.
Steel frames homes in Queensland require a termite management system in accordance with AS3660.1-2014 and remembering not only to reference the BCA but also the NCC National Construction Code that notes: Primary and Secondary timbers require protection. “The Building Code references primary timbers, however the NCC has an Qld amendment”
Besides the compliance requirements in all states, I don’t know of any homeowner that would appreciate a termite repair bill to repair flooring, windows, skirtings, architraves and door jambs on a brand new home. The disruption to a homeowners life when termites enter a building is hard enough to deal with, even if they just eat the wall lining and the leave the rest, termite treatments and eradication methods are also expensive and are ongoing.
To avoid all issues, use treated timbers and steel frames but still ensure you engage a licensed Termite Management installer to guide you through the Termite Barrier Installation to avoid any concealed Termite ingress.
